The recreational paddles are suitable and open to families, clubs, paddlers of all ages and abilities and can be paddled in any type of craft. So dust down your boat and come and join us on these social paddles.  If you don’t have a boat you can hire an open canoe or sea kayak from CANI at a reasonable cost.  Appropriate paddling kit should be brought, for example: Buoyancy Aid, Waterproof and change of clothes etc.

Meet and Trip Plan:

We will meet on Saturday 7th July 2012  at Whiterocks Carpark for a 10am start and hope to finish back at whiterocks for 4pm.  The day’s paddle will be relaxed, with a few breaks and pleasant lunch stop in the middle, so please bring a lunch along with you.

All paddles are subject to weather conditions.

Venue Description:

Strangford Lough offers no less than 80 square nautical miles of paddling playground! From the fast-running tidal channel in the South  to the more gentle waters around the islands there is something for canoeists of all abilities the trail is also home to northern Ireland’s first ‘bothy’, which will provide us with basic shelter and useful facilities whilst on salt island.

Whilst in and around the water look out for common and grey seals swimming, otters and porpoises, which are regularly seen in the Lough.  Among the boulders of the foreshore, look out for knotted wrack seaweed, molluscs such as winkles and chitons, hiding under stones and common seals hauled out on rocks close to the shore.

Costs and Bookings:
The cost of this trip will be free to CANI Members and £10.00 for Non Members.

The cost for Boat hire will be £10.00 to CANI Members and £15.00for Non Members if you require Boat, Paddle and Buoyancy Aid please note it in the additional information on the booking form.

“If you plan to take part in more than one recreation paddle why not take out recreational membership at a cost of £18 per year or family membership at a cost of £25 introductory and £5 for each additional member per year.  This would be much more economical, as recreational paddles are free to all members and the cost of boat hire is at a reduced price.”
