The Big Bann Challenge 18th - 19th August 2012

The Big Bann Challenge is a paddle along the Lower Bann from Newferry to Drumaheglis - a total distance of around 29 km; and will take place on Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th August. An over night camp has been arranged at Portneal Lodge, Kilrea; (for the less adventurous, B&B can be booked independently) It’ll be FUN for both novices and experienced canoeists & kayakers!!

Help raise money

All proceeds raised will go towards our chosen charity, Asterias; which is a local charity dedicated to helping deprived children in Kenya. Sponsorship forms can be provided, and any donations in excess of the basic entrance prices will greatly help poor children in Kenya. www.asterias.org

However if you wish to use the event for a different recognised charity, please let us know and contact your charity to register and gain the appropriate paper work.

Who is eligable to enter  

  • people of all ages (under 18’s must be ac-companied by an adult);
  • families;
  • people with disabilities;
  • corporate organisations;
  • teams/youth groups;
  • novices AND seasoned paddlers.

How to enter

To sign up for this fun event (and get the T-shirt!) complete this Registration Form and return to CANI - office@cani.org.uk

This should be completed and returned to CANI by Wednesday 8th August, together with the Registration Fee (see below).

(Cheques should be made out to CANI)  

If you’re not an experienced canoeist CANI can signpost you to local canoe clubs and training sessions. Advice on equipment is also available from clubs and our many retail partners. All participants registered by 20th July will be offered a free training session provided by qualified Canoe / kayak coaches on Saturday 28th July 2012.

Recomended kit to carry

  • Paddling cag or waterproof top and waterproof bottoms
  • Buoyancy aid
  • Suitable footwear
  • Minimum of 1 litre of water
  • Flask with a hot drink
  • Torch or a light stick
  • Whistle
  • Warm hat
  • 1st Aid Kit
  • Towline (Optional)
  • Split Paddles (Optional)
  • Boat repair kit (Optional)

Limited number of boats and equipment is available on request from CANI.

Overnight arrangments

Portneal Lodge, Kilrea is kindly providing the camp site for the event. B&B can be booked direct at extra cost.
